Turning Japanese

Earlier this year, I put together a pictorial step-by-step how-to video for working Japanese Short Rows when knitting flat.  It is now permanently added onto this site on the “Extras” page.  The video captures photos of each step needed to complete Japanese Short Rows along with text instructions & the 1980’s ‘Turning Japanese’ by the Vapors just to make it that much more exciting.

Below are the various steps needed to work a Japanese short row if you prefer a written version:

Place (removable) markers at extent of short row

Knit across to left marker (slipping right marker along the way)

Remove marker and turn work

Slip next stitch purlwise

Place marker on working yarn

Continue purling across to marker

Remove marker and turn work

Slip next stitch purlwise

Place marker on working yarn

Continue knitting across to the gap

(marker is on stitch below right needle)

Pull marker up

Place pulled stitch on left needle

Knit pulled stitch together with next stitch

Knit remainder of row

Purl across row to gap

Slip next stitch purlwise

Pull marker up

Place pulled stitch on left needle

Slip stitch on right needle back to left

Purl slipped and pulled stitches together

Continue purling across row

One complete Japanese short row has been completed with no visible holes or bumps (on the knit side)!
